02/11 Thumbprint Gallery : Dualism of Love, 7:00PM

Godoy and Lopez-Chavez describe this dualistic thinking through the metaphysics of their work. In this exhibition, the gallery forms a union of two separate creative energies with the expression of unifying the dualism of Love. The artists embrace their thoughts and emotions in a tone of abstract expressionism. For Sonia Lopez-Chavez, the pursuit of passion and beauty has been her calling since inception, "I am very easily inspired by positive, motivated, spiritual people as well as experiences, I live my everyday life with an open heart, loving all that comes my way.” Born in the vibrant city of Guanajuato, Mexico, at an early age Sonia moved to San Diego. Her work embodies pulsating color schemes, themes of heritage as well as inspiration from the Southern California landscape. In comparison, Miguel Angel’s relationship with the aerosol is ”a toxic frenzy now used to be destructive in a beautiful way.” From the age of 13 years Miguel’s relationship with the aerosol can has represented an addiction, darkness, empowerment and lastly his creative release. Hence, his portraits and murals are formed out of a destructive and restorative process, “I build, breakdown, and rebuild environments with aerosol paint.”

March

03/02 Industry Showroom : Power Animals II, 8:00PM

SAN DIEGO, CA–Thumbprint Gallery and Sudden Art Gallery have teamed up to present a second installment of power animals in Power Animals II, on March 2 at Industry Showroom. The show is once again founded on the inherent shamanic belief that everything is alive and based in power and wisdom. Local artist Monstrinho, originally from New York City, is known for his eclectic fusions of spray and acrylic paints with his love of beach culture, the ocean, and graffiti. He describes painting as the thing that makes him, “feel alive,” and has furthered this with his travels and collaborations with other artists. His pieces inspire imagination, fantasy, and complete freedom, with whimsical colors and an innate funkiness that can only be created by the “little monster.” Another artist who will be featured is Franky Agostino, who is greatly influenced by surrealism and artists from his Spanish culture, such as Salvador Dali. The main ingredients of his work are women and the ocean, among a plethora of dream worlds and scenes. He has exhibited internationally in Spain, Costa Rica, Italy, Venezuela, and the United States. Other artists exhibiting are Andre Power, Keemo, Alfie Numeric, Rejeena Victoriano, Eric Wixon, Brian Dombrowsky, and more. Live music will be featured by Now What. The opening starts at 7pm and runs until 12am on March 2nd. Sudden Art Gallery at Industry Showroom is located at 525 Fifth Avenue in downtown, San Diego. All ages are welcome and there is no cover and no dress code. Guests must be 21 to drink.

03/03 Quint Contemporary Art : Mel Bochner, 6:00PM

“It is the opacity of our language and the way in which it predetermines our sight that intrigues me.” – Mel Bochner. Since the 1960’s, Bochner has been using words and their synonyms in his often-conceptual artworks. These new works examine the landscape of language and delve deeply into the meaning of one single word or phrase.
