09/04 The Bakery : Current, 7:00PM

This September at Current — an exhibition of hand-crafted design — we invite you to experience the intriguing work and story of Korean designer Kwangho Lee. His rural upbringing has inspired him to apply hand-crafted techniques (knitting) to otherwise uninspired urban materials (power cables), creating transformative and sculptural lighting installations. Lee's latest creation Black Whale is preparing for migration from Seoul to San Diego: make a date to welcome it at Current this September! Additionally, the studio space in the front of The Bakery will be reimagined as "MERCANTILE", a design pop-up shop showcasing a collection of limited edition hand-crafted objects by 8 American designers and artists; including furniture pieces, prints, and hand-stitched textiles. Works by: Miki Iwasaki, Josh Higgins, Neko Burke, Gabriel Salcedo, Casey Lurie, and Philipp Bosshart, with custom denim by Luxury Death Machine, and jewelry by Cloven Hoof.

09/09 MCASD : alt.pictureshows, 7:00PM

Part cinematic funhouse, part film festival, the eighth annual alt.pictureshows returns in force as San Diego’s premier short-film showcase. This year, MCASD is collaborating with the newly opened San Diego State University Downtown Gallery to present a new lineup of engaging and innovative short films from around the world. During this popular, one-night-only event, portions of MCASD and SDSU’s Downtown Gallery—located on Kettner and Broadway—will be transformed into the ultimate micro-cinema where viewers are encouraged to “physically channel surf” from room to room as a selection of shorts screen on loop throughout the night. alt.pictureshows redefines the movie-going experience, allowing viewers to be in control of what films they choose to watch and when they watch them. This year’s lineup features original, live-action shorts by filmmakers such as Sara Colangelo (“Little Accident”s), Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck and Robert Machoian (“Charlie and the Rabbit”), Martin Stitt (“Family Jewels”); as well as quirky, eye-catching animated shorts by Jeff Drew (“One Square Mile of Earth”), Bastien Dubois (“Madagascar, A Journey Diary”), and many other outstanding artists. Please note that many of the program’s short films contain adult content and are not rated.
