09/08 Film Screening : Call+Response, 7:00PM

CALL+RESPONSE is a first-of-its-kind feature Rocumentary film that reveals a terrifying secret: there are more slaves today than ever before in human history. CALL+RESPONSE goes deep undercover where slavery is thriving. The first hand accounts of Julia Ordmond, Madeline Albright, Daryl Hannah, Ashley Judd and Nicholas Kristof provide the backdrop for this 21st century nightmare, while 12 Grammy Winning and acclaimed recording artists transform this information into inspiration, offering this century its first abolitionist songs. CALL+RESPONSE opens in San Diego on October 17th 2008, but on September 8th, community leaders will have an exclusive opportunity to privately screen the film with Director Justin Dillon. Please RSVP to Fair Trade Pictures' Operations Director: Joel Day (Joel@CallandResponse.com)

09/19 MCASD La Jolla : Weighing & Wanting, 8:00PM

Over the past 25 years, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego has added some 2,000 works of art to its collection, which now totals 4,131 works, having virtually doubled since 1983. Dr. Hugh M. Davies, who in September celebrates 25 years as the Museum's David C. Copley Director, will mark this anniversary with a personal, idiosyncratic selection of approximately 40 works acquired between 1983 and the present. Weighing and Wanting is the first exhibition of a two-part series, and will feature smaller-scale sculpture, paintings, prints, drawings, and photography. The second part, Attempt to Raise Hell, on view in 2009 in the downtown Jacobs Building, will feature installation works. Among the artists whose work will be seen in Weighing and Wanting are Vanessa Beecroft, John Currin, William Kentridge, Nathan Mabry, Yoshitomo Nara, Martin Puryear, Bill Viola, and Lisa Yuskavage. Public educational programs for Weighing and Wanting are made possible by a grant from the County of San Diego's Community Projects Fund and Supervisor Pam Slater-Price.

09/23 Silver Jews @ The Casbah, 8:00PM

Silver Jews are an indie rock group from Hoboken, New Jersey, formed in 1989 by David Berman along with Pavement's Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. Sometimes regarded as a Pavement side project (Pavement drummer Steve West has also been a member of the band), in fact "The Joos" were formed before Pavement, and 1996's The Natural Bridge featured none of the Pavement musicians, offering listeners a more sedate album without the inimitable influence of Stephen Malkmus' guitar and vocals. Silver Jews were always a conduit for David Berman's brand of sardonic, countrified indie rock, and Berman has remained the only constant member. The band has gone on to release several full-length albums, including the latest Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea, released 2008 (Drag City). Berman's sophisticated lyrics have come to dominate the band's music and critical reputation. Berman had long been steadfast in his almost complete refusal to play live, and so surprised the indie world when he embarked on the Silver Jews tour of the United States, Europe, and Israel in 2006. The band are set to begin the U.S. portion of their 2008 tour on August 28 in Columbus, Ohio. Berman is also a published poet. His collection Actual Air was released in 1999 and received favorable reviews from The New Yorker and GQ. Silver Jews' sixth album, Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea, was released June 17, 2008.

09/24 Okkervil RIver, Sea Wolf @ Belly Up, 8:00PM

Okkervil River began as a mutual project of Will Robison Sheff (vocals, guitar), and Seth Warren (guitar). They met and collaborated together when both were still in high school in Meriden, NH. After relocating to Austin, TX in the late 90’s, the duo decided to re-assemble the band with the addition of Zachary Thomas (vocals, bass), Jonathan Meiburg (vocals, banjo), and drummer Mark Pedini. In 1998, the group self-released their first disc, the “Bedroom” (EP), followed a year later with their debut album “Stars Too Small to Use”. During the succeeding years, the band regularly played live on numerous occasions, including an appearance at the South by Southwest festival in 2000. The group’s second album, Don’t Fall in Love With Everyone You See, showed up in 2002, re-affirming the band’s cult following all over the Texas music scene. Since that time, Okkervil River has released a few more full-length albums and several EPs. On April 17, 2006, Okkervil River signed with Virgin/EMI in Europe. On August 7, 2007, the band released their fifth full-length, entitled “The Stage Names,” released, again, on Jagjaguwar. Pitchfork identified the album as “Okkervil River’s most emotionally devastating record yet, and without doubt one of the year’s best.” (From Belly Up website)
